Walk and Talk Episode 10: Don’t Do New Year’s Resolutions, Camping Meals, Sitting Posture Problems, and Best Books of 2016

What’s going on my friends? Happy New Year to all!

Tonight’s Walk and Talk Podcast is available for your entertainment! A new year is upon us, with its gloomy overcast skies, bone stabbing cold, and a time of reflection. It’s a time to tally up the victories and losses, see what worked and what didn’t.

We are all familiar with the “New Year’s Resolution” idea that many people have fun with. In this podcast we will discuss why setting new goals once a year is too damn slow. Course adjustments need to be made every few weeks, not once a year, based on hype!

“Stop Stretching Your Hamstrings”

This was an interesting find, because it clarifies that tight hip flexors cause tight hamstrings, not the other way around. I have spent quite some time working on hamstring flexibility, and not addressing the hips directly. After a few sessions of stretching the hip flexors, I can feel the difference in the hamstrings. Must know information for anyone who has a desk job.

Resources for Camping meals/Backpacking meals:

No matter what, camping meals will take some trial and error. Not everyone can digest the same foods, and tolerate them on the trail. Best advice I can give is look towards high caloric density foods, and eliminate water weight from food.

Operative A’s 2016 Book recommendations

I wasted a lot of time and money on education and books this year, and I won’t let you do the same. Here are my 2016 picks for books, that I can say I won’t feel bad if you spend the $2 – $10 on.

These are not affiliate links, and clicking them won’t give you cancer or spawn pop-ups begging for your credit card information. These were just books I liked.

  • “Eat and Run: My Unlikely Journey to Ultra-marathon Greatness” by Scott Jurek. This books was an interesting account of one of the greatest distance runners of our time. Very focused on the mental aspect, which I liked. Also a ton of recipes in this book, all vegan, which I have not tried, but someday might.
  • “The Ultimate Hang: An Illustrated Guide To Hammock Camping” by Derek J Hansen. Everything there is to know about hammock camping is in this book. Shug recommends it and so do I, as 99% of beginner questions are answered here.
  • “How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big” by Scott Adams. A book about being an entrepreneur, as well as overcoming difficulties. Scott Adams is the cartoonist behind “Dilbert”
  • “The Education of a Bodybuilder” by Arnold Schwarzenegger. This is the old Arnold, before he was a politician, and had to keep up appearances. Main point is the “Mind-muscle connection” which is important to anyone who trains. Wish I had read it sooner.
  • “The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August” by Claire North. A fun fiction book with the idea of time travel. I won’t go into any more detail to avoid spoiling it, read it for yourself.
  • “The Richest Man in Babylon” by George S. Clason. A very simple book about the bare bone basics of saving and investing money. This is written as a series of stories in ancient Babylon, which made it interesting to read.
  • “The Naked Warrior” by Pavel Tsatsouline. A book about body-weight training for those that have no access to a gym or weights. Very helpful ideas such as “spiral tension”.
  • “Choose Yourself!” by James Altucher. A book about being an entrepreneur and choosing to promote yourself, as opposed to being “discovered”, a book about taking control.
  • “Hatchet” by Gary Paulsen. This one is a fiction about a wilderness survival incident. IF it’s been a while since you’ve read it, give it another try. Especially if you enjoy wilderness camping and self-reliance.
